05 Green Building Design > Passiv Haus & Superinsulation

Superinsulated buildings, due to high levels of thermal insulation and airtight construction, do not require any additional heat source apart from during extreme conditions. The heat from occupants’ bodies, equipment and appliances, the sun and artificial lighting is sufficient for ordinary requirements. Passiv Haus is an energy standard gaining widespread recognition throughout the world. This standard requires rigorous airtightness and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Passiv Haus buildings, unless specified with low-embodied energy materials, are not ecological buildings.
