The initiative is part of the Government's vision of more homes of all tenures, built to higher environmental and design standards.
The aim is to create places that will be inherently sustainable as a result of their enduring appeal.
Local authorities, landowners and the development industry are invited to submit innovative proposals to be part of the Initiative that will meet the objectives above, leading to the delivery of new sustainable communities and bring about real change. The creation of new communities may therefore be particularly appropriate in those parts of Scotland experiencing significant housing pressures.
One of the key requirements of the Initiative is that proposals are developed in partnership - the public and private sector both need to be signed up to enable the delivery of these new communities.
This initiative is now closed.
Projects were selected on the basis of outline proposal of around 20 pages, accompanied by a location plan, providing enough information to demonstrate the vision of the proposal in a clear and accessible format. It included a summary which sets out the top 3-5 key attributes of the proposal which are considered to set it apart, what makes this different to a 'standard' development.
