Creating sustainable places brings together many different facets of planning, design, development and regeneration. It combines the traditional challenges of planning with modern policy developments including environmental sustainability, public engagement, economic re-development, aesthetics and efficiency in design and delivery to create a holistic package, focusing on the development of the place, rather than its component parts.

Holyrood magazine is pleased to be hosting this unique event on sustainable place-making, focusing on delivering towns and cities which are thriving economically, socially and culturally. The conference will bring together speakers and delegates from planning, regeneration, transport and the environment to address a range of key issues including how we can reinvigorate our town centres to be the economic backbone of our local communities and how we can use this investment to contribute to achieving other policy goals.

Keynote speakers include:

Jim Mackinnon – Chief Planner, Directorate of the Built Environment, The Scottish
Ricardo Marini – City Design Leader, The City of Edinburgh Council
June Gilles – Partner and Head of Planning, Semple Fraser LLP
Diarmaid Lawler – Head of Urbanism, Architecture and Design Scotland
Kelvin Campbell – Managing Director, Urban Invitiatives
Martin Biewenga – Partner West 8

Speakers will also discuss the impact of the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006 and other key policy documents on the planning system in Scotland. Delegates will hear from a range of key practitioners and policymakers discussing both the challenges and presenting potential solutions which can be implemented your local area.
