06 Events + Activities

An international conference, an award-winning exhibition and an annual Student Award for Sustainable Design are just some of the events and activities that have been part of the Sust. initiative.

In addition to hosting specific Sust. Events, Sust. avoids duplication of effort and dilution of the sustainability message by working with other recognised experts in the sustainability field to deliver joint events and initiatives, including seminars, conferences and exhibitions.

This work includes collaboration with like-minded organisations such as the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Construction Industry Environment Forum (CIEF), the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, the Carbon Trust, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Changeworks, the Forestry Commission Scotland, The Highland Council, the Scottish Executive, The Scottish Solar Energy Group, the Scottish Ecological Design Association, the Scottish Energy Systems Group (SESG), and Homes for Scotland.

Beyond seminars Sust is a sponsor and partner of the Eco Prize for creativity (run by the Eco Trust), has given advice on sustainability in new school design on Islay, is working with the Lighthouse’s Design For Learning Programme and has sponsored the 2006 Eurosun Conference in Glasgow. This type of involvement is set to continue with a number of major architectural conferences coming to Scotland over the next few years.

In May 2006, the Lighthouse Education Team and Sust. assisted the Scottish Executive in the development of The Senses of Place Conference and Workshops, which explored school design beyond the classroom: from outdoor learning to toilets, and from social spaces to dining facilities.
