Building Our Future Publication

Sustainability: Building our future is a publication that draws together two Sust. Phase I projects - a Client's Guide to Sustainable schools (commissioned from GAIA Research) and the study undertaken for East Dunbartonshire Council to assist their procurement process (by Parr Architects). It also presents in detail the outcomes of a Scottish Executive Schools Division workshop held in Glencoe Visitor Centre in July 2004

Building Our Future Publication

The purpose of the publication is to provide guidance to assist the delivery of sustainable schools under all forms of procurement. As such, it covers the issues that should be considered at each stage of the design and construction process in order to ensure that sustainability remains at the heart of the project so that the final product lives up to the client’s and the design team’s expectations. The document is complimentary to the suite of publications entitled Building our Future: Scotland’s School Estate. It is made up of 3 sections:

Section 1 provides general principles of good and sustainable design and advice on achieving and delivering a well-designed, sustainable building.

Section 2 Section 2 presents the (unedited) views expressed by three key speakers at the Scottish Executive’s Sustainability workshop held at Glencoe Visitors’ Centre on 12 July 2004:
Howard Liddell – GAIA Architects
John Easton – Parr Architects
Brian Hemming – The Highland Council.

Finally, Section 3 provides examples of good practice in sustainable school design and some useful references.
