Everyone recognises the importance of sustainability, but the implications are not necessarily well understood. And while many social housing providers in particular have taken some steps to develop sustainability policies for procurement and maintenance, still not enough is being done.
This course has been specifically designed to go beyond the usual sustainability 'awareness raising' approach, to attempt to address key delivery and ongoing operational issues in housing. Thus, Sustainable Designs on You focuses on the elements required to create thriving communities with enduring appeal and the roles of good quality design, maintenance and user engagement in delivering successful places.
The course addresses all aspects of sustainability - from energy and environmental to socio-economic to health issues - based on the Scottish Government's five Strategic Objectives - to create a Scotland which is: wealthier and fairer; healthier; safer and stronger; smarter; and greener - and the associated National Outcomes which will help drive forward the agenda. The quality of Scotland's Built Environment is a key cross cutting issue, but is echoed particularly by a shared aspiration to:
1. live in well-designed, sustainable places where we are able to access the amenities and services we need;
2. value and enjoy our built and natural environment and protect it and enhance it for future generations; and
3. reduce the local and global environmental impact of our consumption and production.
After a successful pilot in 2008, the Sust. team, in conjunction with its housing consultants is now offering bespoke one day (or 2 evening) courses for any organisation/ group of organisations interested in pursuing sustainable development in its widest sense.
The course will appeal to housing association finance, development, maintenance and management staff and committee members, private housing developers and local government officers with an interest in sustainable development.
